Why Use Nutritional Supplements?
QUESTION: I don't like spending money on vitamins if I don't really need them. Can't I just eat right instead of taking supplemental nutrients?
ANSWER: Yes. If you eat the right foods every day and don't have any nutritional deficiencies. If you have close-to-perfect genetics on your side, and don't expend more nutrients than you take in. And if your free radicals are at a minimum, and if you are properly metabolizing what you eat, and so on.
But who fits that description? And if diet alone is sufficient in maintaining health and energy, then why are most of us so tired all the time?
Problem #1: We are NOT what we eat. We are what we metabolize.
Problem #2: We are not even eating the minimum required to meet the RDA/RDI.
Problem #3: The current RDA/RDI is an insult to the human body. We are told to "eat 5 different kinds of fruits and 5 different kinds of vegetables every day to recapture the disease preventing nutrients missing in the American diet." Who actually does that?
There are three reasons why our food supply does not supply appropriate nutrients:
- The average person does not eat 5 fruits and vegetables every day.
- Even if we were to eat 5 fruits and vegetables per day, we would not be getting the correct amount of nutrients. The vitamin, mineral and nutrient content of fruits and vegetables are calculated from the Department of Agriculture tables showing the nutrients contained in fruits and vegetables prior to soil depletion and crop nutrient degeneration (from pesticides and herbicides). There are no current tables showing the net nutrient content based on today's crops. Also, the longer the fruit/vegetable sits during shipping, in the grocery store and then at home prior to being ingested, the less nutrients it contains.
- Current methods of refining foods greatly diminishes nutrient value. Refined foods have up to 95% of their original beneficial nutrients missing. When bread is made, 27 total nutrients are removed from the raw materials to create store-bought bread.
